Export Google Sites

Export Google Sites: "Google has released an API for Google Sites that lets you create or edit pages, upload or download attachments, monitor the activity of a site programmatically. The API could be use to create a new interface for Google Sites, to upload files from other sources or to migrate your data.

Google's Data Liberation team built a Java application for importing and exporting Google Sites. The application lets you export the pages from a site and all their attachments to a folder.

'The folder structure of an exported site is meant to mimic the Sites UI as closely as possible. Thus if exporting to a directory 'rootdirectory,' a top-level page normally located at webspace/pagename, would be in a file named index.html, located in rootdirectory/pagename. A subpage of that page, normally located at webspace/pagename/subpage, would be in a file named index.html in rootdirectory/pagename/subpage. Attachments are downloaded to the same directory as the index.html page to which they belong,' mentions the user guide.

You should only enter the domain name if you use Google Apps. 'Webspace' is the name of your site: http://sites.google.com/site/sitename/.

Unfortunately, you can't use this tool to import HTML files to an existing site. The importing option is only useful for the sites exported using the same application.

For long i was struggling to get dynamic content on my google site. I was looking for a solution which can take data from my google spreadsheet and display in a tabular form on my google site. I finally wrote a gadget which exactly does that.

Check out the final product at http://sites.google.com/site/aarcodelhi/products/portable-audio/cd-radio-cassette-player

The data for this page comes from a spreadsheet : http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tFiR1ZmN_ykniquXwjig-LA

Let the NEWS flow to me

Every person is unique; in addition to that I assume every person (I know) has access to information. In my case: my interest areas vary depending upon my mood, behavior and my likings and vary almost every month if not every week. For example my current interest area has been Indian stock market (some specific stocks) and UID (Indian government Unique Identification project) .

To satiate my thirst on these topics/interests I spend on an average 14 hours (in a week) on internet.

This calls out for approximately 2 days of every month on internet searching for something which I know I will be interested in reading. This is called as NEWS searching.

Now think something like NEWS flowing to me on a specific topic rather than I go and dig out for NEWS. Google Alerts do exactly this. One just has to do something like:

  1. Setting up a search item which I am interested in reading.
  2. Ask Google alerts to send me alerts (in case I want mails) (every month/day/moment)
  3. Or Ask Google alerts to write it to RSS feeds and have a reader on top of it in one's mail box.

I found this amazing to be in touch with what I want. And actually I have saved almost 1 day of my month... at least I can spend more time doing something more worthy rather than just blindly searching.

Something technical - Connection using proxy in eclipse

Though i have restrained myself by not entering some hard core technical things in this blog; it has sometimes negated my initial thinking of "Just Write"....

so adding some technical information.

I was recentrly facing a simple task of making a java program run which was making HTTP/LDAP connection using a proxy in eclipse. I tried various search terms in google but it pointed me to "adding proxt in install/update of Eclipse". Finally i found out that by using "-Dhttp.proxyHost=host.example.com -Dhttp.proxyHost=7777" as the JVM params will resolve issue for any IDE java run. It does not have to be specific to Eclipse.

Hope someone else also finds this useful.

It is getting bigger : 2009 Lok Sabha Elections

With 2009 year 2 crore more people will be eligible to vote. Having said that more youngsters with a bend of mind towards internet and information will be into voting procedure.

Internet community, newspapers and even political parties are well aware of this. And this can be corroborated with following points: -

  1. A lot more videos on youtube this year than what it was a year ago.
  2. All Political parties better web-sites these days. check out websites of BJP and Congress.
  3. BJP has a team of people for internet campaign.
  4. Even Google is in foray with 2009 Lok Sabha Elections.

So it is no longer restricted to newspapers & street campaigns. 2009 general elections are getting bigger and digital.

Publish posts using emails

Though this technology might be there for some time now on web but I found it really fascinating that one can post on blogs using emails as well. All one has to do is following (this is specific for blogger, there might be different ways for other blogging websites)

1.       Login to our account

2.       Go to Settings à Email id

3.       Set an email id to which you should mail so that the mail comes as blog entry.

4.       Just mail blogs to this email id and it will get published/drafted on your blog.

Isn’t that simple!!!

To be Good is not enough

Is doing something which you have been doing for years good enough? Is it good to do what just bears everything materialistic you need in our life? Isn't your goal to beat yourself what you were a day ago, a month ago or even a year ago?

If it is then this little video can be a real stimulus to your thinking.

Success and not winning

Small things and they mean a lot. really we feel that winning a war is such an important thing to do when we keep loosing small small battles in our lifes. Worth watching video.

Credit Crisis

The Crisis of Credit Visualized from Jonathan Jarvis on Vimeo.

From Web
The Short and Simple Story of the Credit Crisis.

The goal of giving form to a complex situation like the credit crisis is to quickly supply the essence of the situation to those unfamiliar and uninitiated. This project was completed as part of my thesis work in the Media Design Program, a graduate studio at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

My thoughts
Though the current situtation is not that simple as it seems to be in the video, but Jonathan actually answers a number of basic questions for a novice. Extremely good video to make sure people get the gist.

Super 30

Our lunch get together at headstrong are never dull. Thanks to from the group. We (Saurav suman, Chaitanya chibba, Maninder singh, Sanjay bahl, Ashish kumar and me) always keep it alive talking about issues ranging from politics, social issues, personal issues, boys issues ;) and what not all. It actually keeps us updated sometimes out dated things as well. One of such topics that came up today was Super 30. To begin with it looked like cricket discussion to me ( you know super 6 and 20-20). But turned out to be a great social initiative by a normal guy to achieve an abnormal feast. Hats off to anand Kumar for that. Go though http://www.super30.org/history.html regarding details on this initiative.

Happy blogging!!
